Is Stem Cell Treatment the Answer for Broken Bones?

Scientists at an Israeli University are hailing stem cells as a potential answer to the treatment of fractures, but are stem cell treatments the best option for healing broken bones? According to an article, published by Hebrew University researchers in the medical journal ‘Stem Cells’, patients with complex bone fractures showed positive results after being treated using stem cell methodology.

Stem Cells to Treat Broken Bones

The method, which is being hailed as a significant advancement in stem cell treatments for fractures and breaks, involves the isolation of multi-potent stem cells (or MSCs) which, broadly speaking, may be used as a universal healing cell, as they are capable of identifying and replicating the tissues that require replacement.

In the past the use of MSCs was limited due to the fact that the isolation and incubation process was a lengthy one, involving extensive laboratory hours to harvest the necessary cells for treatment. However, the Hebrew University researchers claim to have perfected a new form of cell recovery called immune isolation, which allows the cells to be harvested from the bone or fat of the patient and used immediately in a therapeutic fashion. The researchers concluded that the new method could greatly improve the prognosis of individuals with severe injuries including bone fractures and tendon tears.

Vitamin and Mineral Balance Crucial to Bone Healing

However critics claim that use of stem cells is an unnecessary intervention in the treatment of individuals with issues such as bone loss and complex fractures, claiming that healing times in these cases might be greatly improved simply by ensuring the right intake of the vitamins and minerals key to the healing process.

Those with a holistic approach to health believe that ensuring the correct levels of nutrients such as vitamin D, calcium, magnesium and strontium, amongst others, could help insure those with an active lifestyle against the eventuality of a severe injury.

Multivitamin and Healthy Diet Offer the Best Protection

Proponents of a healthy lifestyle claim that simply ensuring a balance of nutrients on a day to day basis through means such as diet, and the addition of a good comprehensive multivitamin and mineral supplement would render stem cell intervention in the treatment of serious injuries unnecessary. They conclude that the body would already be well equipped to heal the damage to tissue and bone without the addition of harvested cells.

Healthy Lifestyle is Insurance Against Injury

Some health professionals have criticized the medical establishment’s readiness to turn to high-technology medical intervention, such as stem cell treatment, when better healthy lifestyle education could render the need for such treatments unnecessary in most cases.

They recommend maintaining a healthy lifestyle and level of fitness on a daily basis in order to mitigate the eventuality of injury, thereby eliminating the need for extraneous medical intervention in that case. While stem cells may indeed aid in the healing of broken bones, maintaining a healthy lifestyle may actually avoid the problem altogether.
